Orientation for International Students

Introduction

Starting your academic journey in a new country is exciting—and we are here to support you every step of the way. All new international students at Cloud Nine College are required to attend an orientation session before beginning their classes. This program is designed to help you adjust to life in Vancouver, understand college expectations, and access essential services.

Admission Process

Before arriving in Canada, students must complete the following admission steps:

1. Submit an Application – You may apply online or in person.
2. Provide Supporting Documents – This includes your academic certificates and English language proficiency test results.
3. Pay Tuition and Fees – A deposit or full program fee is required to confirm your seat.
4. Receive LOA and PAL – Once admitted, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance and Provincial Attestation Letter (if applicable).
5. Apply for a Study Permit – Use your LOA and PAL to apply through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
6. Book Travel and Arrange Housing – We recommend booking flights and accommodations early. Housing resources are available on our website Housing support.

Orientation Schedule

Orientation sessions are held during the week before each academic intake:

– January Intake
– April Intake
– July Intake
– October Intake

Details will be emailed after your LOA is issued.

What Orientation Includes

Each session provides important information and support on:

– Campus tour and introduction to college staff
– Study permit rules and IRCC compliance
– Academic calendar, course schedule, grading, and attendance
– How to succeed in your program
– Health and safety: Naloxone training, mental health resources
– Local living tips: housing, transport, SIM cards, banking
– Student supports: advising, learning services, crisis policy
– Complaint resolution and student conduct policies

Attending orientation ensures that you:

– Understand your rights and responsibilities
– Know how to access help when needed
– Avoid confusion regarding academic and immigration obligations

*Students who miss orientation must attend a make-up session before being fully registered.*

Critical Incident and Crisis Management Policy

Overview

Cloud Nine College is committed to ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all students, staff, and visitors. This policy outlines our response to serious and unexpected events that may affect the physical or psychological safety of individuals on campus or disrupt institutional operations.

A critical incident is defined as:
“An event or series of events that causes or threatens serious harm to people, property, or the learning environment, and requires immediate action.”

Examples of Critical Incidents
– Natural disasters (e.g., earthquake, flood, fire)
– Medical emergencies (e.g., severe injury, seizure)
– Mental health crisis (e.g., suicidal ideation, panic attacks)
– Overdose or substance-related crisis
– Violence or threats (including weapons on campus)
– Missing or unresponsive students
– Bomb threats or suspicious packages

Emergency Response Procedures
1. Call 911 Immediately: For police, fire, or ambulance emergencies.
2. Notify College Staff: Alert a staff member or the front desk as soon as possible.
3. Follow Emergency Instructions: Staff will initiate response protocols and guide evacuation or lockdown procedures.
4. Report the Incident: A written report must be submitted to the College Administration within 24 hours.

Post-Incident Follow-Up
Following a critical incident, Cloud Nine College will:
– Conduct a debriefing session with affected individuals
– Provide referrals for counselling or medical support
– Review incident response effectiveness
– Update this policy as needed
